The Client

Hong Kong Education City Limited is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing education through innovative technology solutions. Working closely with the Education Bureau's Speech and Hearing Services Section, they are committed to creating inclusive learning resources that empower all students.

Their mission is to bridge educational gaps and provide equal learning opportunities for students with special educational needs, particularly those with hearing impairments who face unique challenges in language acquisition.

The Challenge

Students with hearing impairments face significant challenges in learning Chinese vocabulary. Due to hearing loss, they often struggle to grasp phonetic elements (sound and tone), making it difficult to connect pronunciation, character form, and meaning - the three fundamental aspects of Chinese literacy.

This limitation affects their vocabulary development, leading to vague concepts and difficulty expressing themselves clearly, which impacts both academic learning and social communication. The challenge was to create an engaging, accessible mobile learning tool that would help these students master Chinese vocabulary through alternative learning strategies.
